Barbara Dabney Crite

Barbara Marie Crite, affectionally known as “Auntie Marie” was born on February 4, 1937, in Chicago, IL to the parents of Martha Marshall-Mitchell and Thomas Revere Mitchell. In 1954 she married Elijah Dabney. To this union were born one daughter, Sheila Marie Dabney-Johnson and five sons: Elisha Aaron Dabney; Elijah Jr; Milford Joe Dabney; Hiram Sabastian Dabney and Michael Andre’ Dabney. In 1973, she married Wilson Crite of Hopkins Park, IL and was promptly blessed with five sons: Wilson Crite Jr.; Kenneth Crite; Gregory Crite; Daniel Crite and Patrick Crite. “Sister Marie” was baptized in Jesus’ name in the early 1960’s at the Indiana Avenue Pentecostal Church in Chicago, where the late O’Dee Akines was pastor. In 1969, she moved to Kankakee, IL and became an active member of the House of Prayer Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Ella M. Davis. She served as a faithful usher and was passionately active in the women’s ministry and culinary department. In 2000, she officially retired and relocated to Lehigh Acres, FL and became a member of the Upper Room Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Bishop James D. Talley, Sr., Pastor. As a human service provider her career path included being a nursing assistant at Evanston Hospital, Chicago, IL; mental health technician at Manteno State Hospital, Manteno, IL and a cook at Kankakee County Correction Facility, Kankakee, IL. Her passions included cooking, and watching the TV game show, “The Price is Right.” She was an avid basketball (Golden State Warriors) and football (Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers) sports fan. She leaves to mourn, her children, Elisha Aaron Dabney (Kankakee, IL); Milford Joe Dabney (Lehigh Acres, FL); Hiram Sabastian Dabney (Kankakee, IL); Wilson (Carolyn) Crite Jr. of Kankakee, IL; Kenneth (Ciesta) Crite of Matteson, IL; Gregory (Karen) Crite of Hopkins Park, IL; Daniel (Margret) Crite of Minneapolis, MN and Patrick Crite of Madison, WI and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends, including her Upper Room House of Prayer Church Family. Sister Marie was preceded in death by her parents; spouses Elijah Dabney, Sr. and Wilson Crite, Sr.; brother, Thomas Mitchell, Jr.; dearest sister-in-law, Naomi Talley-Simmons; and three children, Sheila Marie Johnson; Elijah Dabney, Jr. and Michael Dabney.
