Samuel Dixon, 79, of Kankakee, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at his home. Visitation will be Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 5-8 P.M. at Lax Mortuary and again on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11:00 A.M. at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor C. Ramont Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens of Memory. Samuel Dixon was born October 26, 1931 in Bolton, Mississippi to Samuel Sr. and Willie Bell Dixon. He was baptized at Mount Center Church, in Raymond, Mississippi, by the Rev. E. B. Nelson. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Florine Taylor. He was employed by A. O. Smith for 25 years and had also worked for Gould National Battery. Samuel was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where he also served as former chairman of the Deacon board, Deacon of the Sunday School department and member of the LaymenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s League. Samuel lived in Kankakee for 50 years. He enjoyed singing, socializing, community volunteering/taxi driver and bible study at the MidTowers complex, but he will be most remembered for his mentoring. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Florine Dixon of Ellenwood, GA; two sons, Ernest Jefferson of Rockford, IL and Robert Washington of Kankakee, IL; eight daughters and two sons-in-law, Gloria Jean Dixon and Letha Ann Dixon, both of Tupelo, Mississippi, Charlotte Jefferson and Mary Dixon, both of Kankakee, IL, Paulette and Rick Banks of Harvey, IL, Zena Daniels of McDonough, GA, Ardelia and Gary Mays of Stockbridge, GA, and Tonia Dixon of Nashville, TN; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Robert Dixon of Kankakee, IL, George and Loretha Dixon and Roosevelt Dixon all of Gary, IN; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Rosie Nelson of Jackson, Mississippi, Christine and Reverend Roger Sykes of Kankakee, IL, Katherine and Harry Edmond of Minneapolis, MN and Carrie and Robert Williams of Hamilton, OH; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joseph Dixon and four sisters, Ernestine Smith, Josie Bell Watson, Mary Carroll and Pollie Mae Dixon.
