Lucy Abdul-Nur, 70, of Kankakee, IL, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at her residence. Visitation will be Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Lax Mortuary and again on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11:00 A.M. at The Free Christion Center, 111 E. Oak Street, Kankakee, IL. Reverend Christopher Clark Sr. will officiate and Reverend Jacob Hawkins will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens of Memory. Lucy Abdul-Nur was born September 26, 1946 in Star City, Arkansas to Willie Benjamin and Bessie Buggs. She received her high school diploma from Mott Adult High in Flint, MI. Lucy worked in Customer Service at Value City in Jeffersonville, IN. She also was a food aide for the Jefferson County Public School System in Louisville, KY. Lucy was an active member of the Russell Area Community Center and served on the board at Louisville Central Community Center. She volunteered at the neighborhood Boys and Girls Club, baked desserts for the women incarcerated at the prison and fed many homeless individuals. She will be remembered most for her love of community as well as always having an open home. She was a mentor to young men and women. Lucy was a selfless woman who loved to help and educate others. She loved her sons and family. She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, Hassan Shareef and Karim Abdul-Nur, both of Louisville, KY and Ghuneem Abdul-Nur of Grand Forks, North Dakota; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Kathy Benjamin of Battle Creek, MI, Jesse and Katherine Benjamin of Flint, MI, Joe and Kenyetta Benjamin of Rockford, IL and Alvin Benjamin of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; eight sisters and one brother-in-law, Josephine Clark of Kankakee, IL, Romonia and Jacob Hawkins of Flint, MI, Mary Benjamin and Vera Benjamin, both of Shreveport, LA, Veronica Benjamin of Wichita, KS, Terri Benjamin, Angela James and Tanya Benjamin, all of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; one aunt, Martharein Brooks of Houston, TX; one uncle, William and Kathy Brooks of Flint, MI; special friend, Edna Sharif of Louisville, KY; the father of two of her sons, Jamal Abdul-Nur of Louisville, KY and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her first husband, Larry Thornton Sr.; one son, Larry Thornton Jr. and one daughter, Yvette Thornton.
