James Houston Jr., 97, of Pembroke Township, IL, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Presence Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home in Bourbonnais, IL. Visitation will be Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11:00 A.M. at Lax Mortuary. Reverend Louis Barnes will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to the family. James Houston Jr was born August 22, 1919 in Duncan, Mississippi to James Houston and Mary Williams. He was baptized at a young age and was a member of St. Anne Woods Chapel. He worked as a janitor at Manteno State Hospital for 25 years and was a passenger driver for Thresholds for 10 years. Mr. Houston enjoyed hunting, playing cards and was a pool shark who won many trophies over the years. He was a jack-of-all trades, master of none, and a great outdoorsman. Other favorite pastimes were horse racing, auctions, rodeos, church picnics, parades and many other community events. He also enjoyed basketball and baseball. He loved to dress well. An outgoing person, he relished time spent with family, friends and associates. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Fred (Bernetta) Houston Sr. of Chicago, IL, Nona Winston, Jeffery Winston, Louise Winston, Rietha Winston, Lashawn Winston, Freddie Winston, Jermaine (Diana) Grundy Sr. of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Terenee Grundy of Kankakee, IL, Demond Grundy of Kankakee, IL, Roxie Branch of Pembroke Township, IL, Sheldon Grundy, Tametta Grundy and Lanre Branch, all of Kankakee, IL; 15 plus other children; 50 plus grandchildren, 75 plus great-grandchildren; 25 plus great-great-grandchildren; 10 plus great-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, friends and a host of associates; three special friends, Johnny Bender, Nelson White and Mr. Levi. He was preceded in death by several of his children and their mothers; one grandson, Jermaine Everette Grundy II; the mothers of his children, Rosie Lee Moss, Carol Thompson, Dorthy Jean Grundy and Bobbie Jean Branch; a very special brother-in-law, Kenneth Green; aunts and uncles and several friends that he held close to his heart and they are now at rest with him.
