Winston Sykes

Winston Sykes was born December 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to Cora Lee Sykes and Willey Sykes. He was the eldest son of eight children. Winston married Sheree Marshall in 1978 and was looking forward to their 45th wedding anniversary in May. Winston’s family moved from Chicago to Hopkins Park where he graduated from Pembroke Consolidated Schools and St. Anne Community High School. Winston also attended Wilberforce University in Ohio for a short time. Winston is best remembered for his work in the construction field. He enjoyed carpentry work and remodeled many kitchens and bathrooms, replaced roofing and built garages for many in the Kankakee area. He would also do minor repairs in plumbing and heating when asked. Winston was always willing to help others as his skills allowed him to. One of Winston’s favorite pastimes involved music—listening to different types of music, singing and playing various instruments. He enjoyed preparing Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas prime rib and grilling in the warmer months. Winston was the chef in the household for most meals for him and his wife. He could often be found fishing by himself, or with a friend or his grandson. Winston enjoyed binge-watching many old TV series such as “Monk” and new movies. He also enjoyed playing billiards with his friends. Winston and Sheree joined Caldwell Chapel AME Zion Church in Kankakee and raised their family there. Singing in the gospel choir was a favorite of his. He also served as a trustee for several years and of course assisted with the upkeep of the church. Preceding Winston in death were his parents and two brothers, Willey and Phillip Sykes. Winston Sykes transitioned from his earthly life to eternal life on January 29, 2023. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sheree Sykes of Bourbonnais; his daughters, Rachel (Jeff) Dudek of Plainfield and Rhonda (Jimmie) Currie of Bourbonnais; his sons, Roderick (Samantha) Sykes of Momence and Ronnie Hayes of Arizona; his dearly loved grandson, Drake Currie and granddaughter, Brady Sykes; his sisters, Sandra Sykes of Florida, Norma Tucker of Bourbonnais and Robin Stroud of Hopkins Park and brothers, Donnie Sykes and Rory (Bernice) Tucker. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
