MAFALDA SIMPSON

Mafalda DiSomma-Simpson was the eighth child of 14 born in Naples, Italy on February 2, 1927 to the union of Dr. Giulio and Bianca DiSomma, and transitioned on June 18, 2016 at Gilman Nursing Home, Gilman, IL. Mafalda is a direct descendant of Nicola DiSomma of Nobility during the time of King Carlo II of Naples, Italy. He was of the royal court and was the royal advisor, judge of the judicial appeal, and he was a renowned captain of Emperor Carlo V and State Councilor. Mafalda met the late Sgt. Joseph V. Cherry during WW2 and married him November 22, 1946. To that marriage union was born Joseph, Jr and Gloria Maria, after coming to America and settling in Chicago, IL. She later, married the late Eugene D. Simpson, July 31, 1970 and no children were born to this union. Mafalda was born again in 1976 at the House of Prayer Church in Kankakee, IL and later became a member of Shabach Global Ministries of Kankakee, where her daughter is now Pastor. She formerly worked at Jimmy Holmes Clothing Store as a tailor and was an accomplished artist. She was a loving and devoted mother to Joseph and Gloria Maria. She faithfully served at her home church, until her illness, as a board member, Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher and head of the ShepherdÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Committee. She was well loved and respected by the entire congregation and known as having a gentle spirit, always reaching out and doing special things for everyone she encountered. Mafalda leaves to cherish her memories, her son, Joseph Cherry of Atlanta, GA; her daughter, Gloria Maria Cummings and loving son-in-law, Apostle Jeremiah Cummings of Saint Anne, IL; three sisters, Antonietta Cerqua, Bianca Beneduce and Lucia Liccardo, all of Naples, Italy; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a special God-daughter, Delphine Gordon of Kankakee, IL; two special God-sons, Jimmy Holmes and Norman Gaskin of Bradley, IL; a special God-Sister, Rosaria Russo-Rollins of California; the Shabach Global Ministries Church family, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Dr. Giulio and Bianca DiSomma; her loving husband, Eugene D. Simpson; her brothers, Angelo, Mario, Vincenzo, Carlo and Giulio DiSomma; her sisters, Filomena Florio, Elisabetta Dixon and Maria DiSomma and one great-granddaughter, Nancy Maria Robinson. There will be no visitation or funeral services. Cremation rites will be accorded.
