Ethel Greer

Ethel “Pudding” Greer was born October 7, 1936, in Inverness, Mississippi to C’More Gaines and Roberta Ford Washington. She was the eldest of 10 children by her mother. Ethel married J.C. Greer in 1960 and altogether she had 10 beautiful children. Ethel gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined Paxton M.B. Church under the leadership of Reverend Bryant. Ethel completed her general education and later in life worked as a laundry aid in a senior living facility for many years. She also worked as a daycare ‘Grandma.’ After moving to Kankakee, IL in 1973 she joined Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Tyler J. Prude. She loved her church and most importantly, she loved God. In 2008, Ethel moved to Chicago. She joined Mt. Vernon M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor J.L. Miller and in her last years, fellowshipped with Christ Outreach Center under the leadership of Pastor Robert Wheeler. Ethel enjoyed being around family and making sure she put a smile on her grandchildren’s face. No matter what she may have gone through, she would always confess how good Jesus has been in her life. Ethel is survived by four sons, Gerome Greer and Timothy Greer of Chicago IL and Melvin Greer and Charles Greer of Kankakee, IL; five daughters, Sandra Washington of Chicago, IL, Emma Jean Huey and Barbara Ann Greer of Tennessee, Bertha Greer of Mississippi and Pertrina Greer of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Aretha Boatman and Loretha Washington, and one brother, Stanley Washington, all of Kankakee, IL; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and two special friends, Anne Bailey of Kankakee, IL and Ledella O’Neal of St. Louis, MO. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, C’More Gaines and Roberta (Ford) Washington; her husband, John (J.C.) Greer; one son, Fredrick Greer; four brothers, Darius Washington, C.J. Washington, R.J. Washington and Charles Washington; two sisters, Dorothy Lee Gaines and Flora Sanders; one grandson, Steven Williams; one nephew, Marcus Sanders, and one niece, Traneshia Dunigan. On, August 24, 2023, Ethel heard the voice of God and answered his call. She will be deeply missed by all her loved ones, but her love for God shall bring peace to those in sorrow.
